Darlington actress to release children’s book for World Diabetes Day

Jade Byrne - Daisy Donald

An actress from Darlington is set to release her debut children’s book to coincide with World Diabetes Day.

Jade Byrne, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1989, has penned “Daisy Donald” – a children’s book which follows a 6-year-old, ginger-haired, dungaree dress-wearing child who wears a superhero cape to fight off an invisible monster representing diabetes.

Speaking about the release of her children’s book, Byrne said: “I’ve met a lot of people throughout my life, and more recently in the type 1 diabetes world, of the lack of understanding and also learnt from those that it’s not their fault that they’re ignorant to what type 1 is. It’s actually because they’ve not been taught about it.”

“If you’re going to teach people, you need to start from the bottom up. If you learn from a young age, then you can pass it on for generations to come.”

Jade Byrne is also the brainchild of “Pricks” – a one-woman show which sees Jade tell a warm, engaging and uplifting story with poetry, original soundscape about families and learning to care for others better.

It was during her ongoing run with Pricks that Byrne came up with the next stage in her mission to educate people about living with diabetes.

She explained: “I really love children’s books and books that rhyme. That’s why Daisy Donald had to rhyme. I find those type of books much more fun to read.

“I hope that other type 1s, or people with connections to it, will also be able to relate to that monster and that people learn something new about type 1 diabetes and the reality of it.”

“Daisy Donald” will be released in line with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s World Diabetes Day superhero campaign on Thursday, November 14th, 2019.

A percentage of the sales from the book will be given to the charity, which Jade Byrne is a celebrity ambassador for.

The book can be purchased from the Pricks Etsy page. You can find out more about Jade Byrne on her website.
