Jacky & Friends
In a time where the meaning of ‘house music’ is constantly evolving, a new generation of producers and DJs alike are breaking through. An artist who has taken this change of direction in his stride is Jacky.
Jacky’s love for music started young when he was growing up in East Africa. It was there his passion for drumming took hold and he came to realise that music was going to be more than just a creative outlet and his sights were set on forging a career in the industry.
Fast forward to summer 2017 and Jacky has a whole lot in the pipeline including a string of releases on some of the underground’s hottest imprints. Namely seminal London label DFTD, where he dropped hit EP ‘Sensation’ which took him to the top five on Beatport’s tech house chart. His ties to to the label do not end there though, as he has also secured an Ibiza residency at the now infamous Defected parties, taking over Eden every weekend throughout the summer.
Jacky cut his teeth with Barcelona based institution Elrow in 2015 with the release of hit EP ‘Diskotek’, which made a serious impact on dancefloors throughout the underground and went on to reach number eight in the Beatport chart – Firmly establishing him as an artist to sit up and take note of.
Beyond Elrow, Jacky has made his own mark on the underground club scene with the launch of his own event series – Jacky & Friends. Since breaking ground, J&F events have sold out several of Europe’s key venues including Sankeys MCR, Fire London, Digital Newcastle, Mint Warehouse Leeds, Eden Ibiza’s back room and Benimusa Park where they invaded the Treehouse stage during the legendary Zoo Project events for a string of dates throughout the summer 2017 season.
Since signing his first record in the summer of 2014, Jacky has gone on to receive widespread praise from some of the industry’s biggest artists, including Steve Lawler, Skream, Jamie Jones, Marco Carola, Richy Ahmed, Nick Curly, and Santé – All of whom gave full support on his debut releases.
The Newcastle born lad also launched his own label ‘Red Lunar Records’ in 2014 with a close friend of his, Richard Heiniger. Now entering their third year of operations, they have featured artists such as Alexis Raphael, De La Swing, Jey Kurmis, Di Chiara Brothers with further growth projected throughout 2017.
It’s not often you see a rising star who’s been around forever, but that’s Ki Creighton – an absolute bastion of proper house music over three decades, but now this is his time in the spotlight.
After launching his label “Under No Illusion” in 2013, his rise has been stratospheric… you can now see him popping at the likes of Elrow @ Space, Hot Creations @ Digital, Cafe Mambo, Papagayo in Gran Canaria, not to mention Sonar where he played a total of three gigs one year. He’s also become something of a legend in Cologne, holding down a residency at Living Room having previously spun at the world-famous Heinz Gaul and Reineke Fuchs.
Before Ki hit the heights internationally he really earned his stripes rocking it at venues across the UK since the mid 90s, including a residency at legendary Carlisle club night Uber which lasted ten years – the entire lifetime of the night. At Uber he played alongside the likes of Roger Sanchez, Hot Since 82, Green Velvet, Eats Everything, David Morales and of course his old best buddy, Yousef.
But it isn’t just about where he plays, it’s how he plays – in fact – it’s how he is. This guy has some serious energy! The moment you meet him you know he absolutely lives and breathes the music… he’d be completely lost without it… and that really comes across in his performances. Total passion, total carnage!
On the production front Ki has released on some serious labels down the years including Elrow, Snatch, Circus, 8bit, Lost Recordings, Kenja, WOW Recordings, New Violence, Glasgow Underground, Cajual, Material, and Underground Audio. As if that wasn’t enough, his own label UNI Recordings managed to break a record and feature a total of three times in one night on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show. Three times!
Lee Walker’s swift, yet assured ascension up the ranks of the DJ leagues is the result of his staunch dedication to music. Lee’s work ethic has always been high, ever since he started playing around with music production he knew he’d found his calling which spurned him on to keep working, learning and refining. Fuelled by a deep-set love for electronic music, and the grafter mentality instilled in him through growing up in the north-east of the UK, Lee is riding the crest of a wave and working hard to make sure he stays there, perfectly balanced yet moving ever forward.
Over 10 years since he started playing around with electronic sounds in his bedroom at home, Lee Walker is living out his dreams, performing at some of the world’s best-known clubs and rubbing shoulders with his idols in the process. Early support of his music came from some of the scene’s most influential players, house and techno royalty you could say – the long list of supporters includes Marco Carola, Dixon, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler and Disclosure. Thanks to his upbringing though, Lee is taking it all in his stride, and rather than let the early successes go to his head, he’s been channelling his energy into maintaining the high standards set with his first few releases.
2015 was the year Lee Walker was thrust into the limelight. His cheeky edit of DJ Deeon’s ‘Freak Like Me’ hit Soundcloud, and before he knew it Marco Carola had spun it in Ibiza and over a million YouTube views came flooding in. The track was signed by Defected and sat at the top of Beatport’s revered chart for six weeks, picking up a slew of accolades including “Hottest Record in the World”, “Essential New Tune”, and “Future Anthem” in the space of a week – and also took home ‘Best Remix’ at the DJ Mag Best Of British Awards.
Far from being a one-hit wonder though, Lee has been hard at work in the studio ever since – utilising that first burst of fame as the catalyst for a slew of releases with respected labels. EPs with the mighty Defected, Nurvous, No Idea’s Original and Wiggle, together with solo tracks and remixes on Hotflush, Circus Recordings and Hot Creations, have demonstrated Lee’s production prowess, delivering one slinky club-ready cut after another – keeping it groovy, with hypnotic rhythms and funky basslines designed to fill the dance floor with energy.
Gig-wise, Lee’s DJ skills have captured the attention of world-renowned promoters and is now a regular face at Elrow’s flamboyant shows, as well as being booked to play at Hideout Festival and Creamfields, and club gigs including Studio338 (London), Motion (Bristol), Yousef’s infamous Circus (Liverpool) plus the legendary Space Terrace and Zoo Project in Ibiza and a whole host of club and festival bookings across the UK and Europe.
Lee’s achievements have given him a life he has always dreamed of, and rather than take it for granted, he has opted to channel his success back into the industry, setting up his own label which will support the music of up and coming artists. Called We, The People, the idea is to give up and coming artists a head start, in the same way that Lee was supported back when he first caught the attention of the scene’s tastemakers.
Lee Walker is hardworking, humble and dedicated to the progression of club culture through his musical endeavours. Whether he’s spinning in a club and sending the dance floor into uproar, in the studio cooking up another hot new jam or scouting for new talent to support via his label, he does it all with a positive outlook, a wicked sense of humour and a genuine love for music. With such a wealth of positivity around him, Lee is an unstoppable force and one of the UK’s most exciting young artists…
