Events in Darlington: August 2019

Hear ye, hear ye, the British Town Crier Championships head to Darlington in August, with competitors from all over the UK descending on the town centre.

Other events worth shouting about in August include the SG Petch Darlington 10km, the Vintage Vehicle Rally and two new music events in the Market Square.

Jess Glynne

Raised in Muswell Hill, London, Jess Glynne rose to fame when she scored not one, but two No.1 singles as a featured artist on Clean Bandit’s Rather Be and Route’s 94 My Love in 2014. The song Rather Be won a Grammy in 2015 for Best Dance Recording.

Her first solo single, Right Here, was also released in 2014, and reached No.6 in the UK Singles Charts. It was the first single from her debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, released the following year. It peaked at the top spot in the UK Album Charts, and reached the top 10 in multiple countries including Italy, Australia, The Netherlands and Ireland.

British Town Crier Championships

Town Crier

Darlington will play host to the Town Crier British Championships, the blue ribbon in The Loyal Company of Town Criers’ calendar.

Competitors from all over the UK will participate in two rounds, one held in Joseph Pease Place, the other near the Market Cross.

Darlington Gay Pride, the annual celebration of the LGBT community, returns on Monday, August 12th, 2019.

On the night, bars across the town centre, including Number One Bar, The Hoskins, Avalon, Harveys and Inside Out, will be putting on a whole host of celebrations.
