Improvement works to be carried out on Church Row

Improvement works will be carried out on Church Row in Darlington town centre, Darlington Borough Council has announced.

In its current layout, the road narrows in the middle, which often causes problems for the increased number of buses, coaches and delivery vehicles that use the route.

As part of the improvement works, the road will be resurfaced, removing the cobbles that were installed in 1996, to create a smoother surface for all road users.

A new footpath will also be created as part of the scheme to improve safety for pedestrians.

The new layout has been designed to reuse as many materials in the area as possible to ensure that it remains in keeping with the Market Square and the surrounding area.

Councillor Nick Wallis, cabinet member for leisure and local environment, said: “Church Row is a busy link road through the town centre and we ask motorists to be patient with us while these improvements are completed.

“The road is being used more than ever by heavy vehicles, particularly buses and coaches, so these changes will make it much easier for two vehicles to pass each other safely, improve pedestrian access and lessen the maintenance costs going forward.

“We’re working with St Cuthbert’s Church and nearby businesses to ensure access is maintained as much as possible.”

The improvement works to Church Row will begin on Monday, September 10th, 2018 and is expected to take 12 weeks.

In the first phase of the works, a one-way system will operate from the direction of Tubwell Row towards the town hall. This will take approximately six weeks.

During this phase, the bus stops in front of the town hall will not be affected. However, the bus stop opposite Feethams Vue will be suspended; services 3A and 3B will instead pick up and drop off passengers at Tubwell Row stops H and K.

The second phase will see the complete closure of Church Row between the Town Hall and Tubwell Row.

During this phase, the bus stops M and T outside the Town Hall will be relocated to Crown Street, outside Sports Direct.

There will also be a final short phase of works at the end when the one-way system is reinstated.

During all phases of the work the coach stop will be relocated outside Nando’s at Feethams. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times through the works.
