Thriller Live Review

Features

The iconic sound of Michael Jackson’s music filled the Darlington Hippodrome on Monday, May 28th, 2018, as part of the “Thriller Live” UK tour.

Direct from London’s West End, Thriller Live is a catalogue of Michael Jackson’s biggest hits, ranging from his Motown days in the Jackson 5 to his multi-platinum-selling solo albums, “Thriller” and “Bad”.

The result is a mixture of catchy medleys, lively numbers and tear-inducing ballads, including well-known hits such as “Smooth Criminal”, “Billie Jean”, “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Beat It”, among many others.

The two-hour long show, which originally premiered in 2009, features five lead vocalists, Britt Quintin, Shaquille Hemmans, Eddy Lima, Ina Seidon and Rory Taylor, who delivered excellent performances, taking it in turns to pay tribute to the King of Pop.

However, it’s Eddy Lima who particularly stands out, not only replicating Michael Jackson’s vocals to a very high standard, but also his mannerisms and dance moves. Likewise, Rory Taylor displays some excellent vocals, especially during a poignant rendition of “She’s Out Of My Life”.

The vocalists are joined on stage by a troupe of backing dancers, whose high energy choreography features Michael Jackson’s traditional moves such as the moonwalk and the infamous “Smooth Criminal” lean, whilst also incorporating a modern and exciting approach, including the “floss” dance made famous by the video game, “Fornite”.

The choreography is fascinating to watch, as the dancers, donning replica outfits of the era, utilise every aspect of the stage, working in perfect tandem with each other, the lighting, the pyrotechnics and the well-implemented screen effects.

The vocalists and the dancers are backed by the house band, led by Andy Jeffcoat, who brilliantly reproduce the iconic Michael Jackson sound everybody knows and loves.
